The original track, which was in use until 1951, comprised 10.6 kilometres of rough and dusty public roads, which formed a narrow track of hills and valleys. On paper it looked like a featureless rectangle with four sharp right corners. From behind the wheel, however, the conditions were brutal, with drivers being forced to move through billowing dust and flying stones.
Then in 1951, a local businessman built a new track, only two kilometres from the original location. The only suitable piece of land available was directly along the coast at the south-western end of the island. It is the location that is responsible for the track’s great differences in altitude, with sometimes considerable winds blowing in from the sea. The first races on this new track were held in 1956. Since 1990, a heat of the World Superbike Championship has been held at the Phillip Island track.
The track is located on Phillip Island on the coast of the Bass Strait in the Australian state of Victoria, about 120km south-east of Melbourne.
